2010 USTA Vermont Junior Newsletter

USTA Recreational Coaches Workshop (RCW) If you are planning on assisting with a tennis program this summer, sign up to attend this workshop on Sunday, June 6, 9:00am–3:30pm at Sports & Fitness Edge, Essex, Jct. It will focus on teaching beginners and be taught by Mike Kolendo, a USPTA certified teaching pro and nationally trained RCW instructor.  The cost, which includes lunch, is $ 40.00 before Friday 5/12 and $50.00 after 5/12.  To register, contact Tammy Azur at 802-879-7734, x127 or tammya@sfedge.com.

2010 Vermont Junior Tournaments

 

Vermont Junior Grand Prix We hope you will take the opportunity to pursue a Vermont ranking by competing in at least two of the VERMONT JUNIOR GRAND PRIX events listed in the enclosed flyer.

 

USTA New England Sanctioned Junior Tournaments

This year there are four Level 7 sanctioned junior tournaments being held in Vermont. A player who plays a junior sanctioned event and wins at least one match receives points and is eligible on the standings list.

 

There are also two parent/child events, one in Woodstock and one at the Bridges Resort (see below).

Junior Team Tennis USTA Junior Team Tennis is a program of team practice and match play for boys and girls ages 6–18 who want to play on a tennis team. Teams are comprised of players of similar age and skill level, and they compete against other teams from the same geographic region in one of three divisions: 18 & under, 14 & under, and 12 & under.  There is an advanced (JNTRP 3.5 and above) and intermediate (JNTRP 3.0 and below) level for each age division.  All divisions are eligible to compete in State Championships; the 18 & under and 14 & under divisions are eligible for advancement to Sectional and National Championships.

§   Champlain Valley Jr. Team Tennis League The program will begin in mid June and run through mid August 2010, exact dates are to be determined.  Jr. Team Tennis is a grassroots community level tennis program governed by the USTA for boys and girls ages 6 to 18 who want to play on tennis teams. Teams are comprised of players of similar age and skill and they compete against other teams from the same geographic region in one of four divisions: 18 & under, 14 & under, 12 & under, and 10 & under; all divisions have an advanced, intermediate, and novice category. The 18 and 14 divisions are eligible for post-season play to include sectional and national championships hosted by the USTA. The 12 and 10 divisions play locally and are eligible to compete in any local or state championships. 24th Annual USTA Vermont Grassroots Tennis Camp To be held Wednesday and Thursday, August 4–5 at the Windridge Teela-Wooket Tennis Camp in Roxbury, Vermont. If you are a low intermediate player 12–14 years old and would love the opportunity to participate in two intensive days of tennis at a real tennis camp, you may be eligible to attend the USTA Vermont Grassroots Tennis Camp.  The camp is limited to 50 campers, all nominated by their instructors/pros.  Sportsmanship is a major criterion for selection. Vermont pros/instructors give their time to the camp.  The total cost of the camp is $75.00.  If you are interested and eligible to attend this special camp, please contact your local coach/instructor/pro or Kirsten McEdward, the director of the Grassroots Camp, at  kmced@comcast.net.

Rogers Cup in Montreal This year the WTA Tour comes to Montreal August 14-22!  The top women professionals will be there. It is always a great event and not far away for most Vermonters. If you have a chance to go you will see some great tennis in a beautiful setting.

2010 US Open President’s Box Raffle Northshire CTA is holding a raffle for two seats in the President’s Box at the 2010 US Open (compliments of USTA Vermont) and a night at the Benjamin Hotel: $5 a ticket or a book of 6 for $25.
